Bausch + Lomb said it plans to advance one of its eye disease treatments following a meeting with the Food and Drug Administration it described as constructive.
The eye health company said the FDA meeting gave clarity on the development path of BL1243, or tonabersat, a treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration.
The FDA was supportive in principle of a proposed initial study design, the company said, adding that results from the initial study are expected to support advancement into a phase 2 study. The clinical program in dry AMD is expected to launch in 2027.
"The oral route of administration, prior clinical experience and potential application in earlier-stage disease make BL1243 a particularly compelling program as we continue building the next generation of treatments for eye health," Chief Medical Officer Yehia Hashad said.
