India Aims to End Foreign Dependence on Power Grid SCADA by 2029

India plans to develop indigenous Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for critical power infrastructure, including the national grid, by 2029, according to a Central Electricity Authority report on Tuesday.

The roadmap aims to develop domestic capabilities in SCADA hardware and software, reducing the power sector's reliance on foreign technology and addressing risks associated with supply-chain disruptions, technology restrictions, and cybersecurity.

The CEA said existing rules require SCADA systems to have at least 50% local content, but the actual share of domestically developed software and hardware is currently about 20%.

The proposed measures include building domestic manufacturing capacity, establishing testing and certification agencies, and providing financial support to SCADA system developers.
