The Singapore Computer Society (SCS) has launched an employer-led pathway to help professionals choose AI courses relevant to their work and recognised by employers.\nCalled the Skills Pathway for AI, it complements existing AI-bilingual workforce efforts under MDDI and IMDA's National AI Impact Programme and TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA). Rather than introduce another standalone course, the programme curates existing training and links it to workplace capabilities and entry-level AI roles.\n\"With so many AI courses and certifications now available, individuals may not know which ones are most relevant to their jobs or valued by employers. This employer-led approach [through Skills Pathway for AI] is central to the pathway and is consistent with the finalised materials, which emphasise clearer guidance for both individuals and employers,\" says Edward Chen, chairman of the Skills Pathway for AI at SCS.\nThe initiative is supported by the Skills & Workforce Development Agency, Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and AI Singapore. Its 15 founding employers include DBS, GIC, Grab, NCS, PSA Singapore, Singtel, ST Engineering and Temasek.\nSCS says employers and professional bodies helped identify the capabilities required for different roles, then mapped relevant courses and certifications against them. For aspiring technical specialists, the pathway also calls for evidence of applied knowledge, such as projects, portfolios or deployed solutions, and gives guidance on technical assessments and interviews.\nThe pathway has two tracks. Firstly, the AI Bilingual Pathway is for business users and non-technical professionals. It covers AI literacy, the use of AI and automation tools at work, and governance and risk.\nSecondly, the AI Technical Specialist Pathway covers five entry-level roles: AI platform engineer, AI application engineer, AI solutions architect, AI product manager, and AI ethics and compliance officer. Courses listed include programmes from AI Singapore, local universities, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Nvidia and Anthropic.\nWhile participants will have opportunities to be considered for relevant openings with those employers, employment will depend on the candidate's merits and each employer's requirements and selection process.\nSpeaking at the SCS Tech3 Forum, Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo says: \"For those already in the workforce, AI bilingualism offers a way forward. It recognises that professional knowledge and AI skills are complementary.\"\n\"As AI becomes better at producing code, analysis and content, the premium on human judgement will rise - the judgement to know what needs solving, why some solutions are more likely to work, and how to take things forward. That includes developing a deep understanding of context, relationships and consequences,\" she adds.\nTo bring those considerations into the pathway, SCS worked with the Institution of Engineers Singapore, Singapore Logistics Association and Singapore Medical Association. Their input is intended to ensure that training accounts for how AI is used in engineering, logistics and healthcare, alongside general AI knowledge.\nThat practical, domain-based approach is also what participating employers say they need. Grab uses AI \"every day to solve problems for millions of users as well as for ourselves,\" says chief organisational capability officer Ong Chin Yin, adding that the company values people with practical AI capabilities.\nMeanwhile, Singtel has trained its Singapore workforce in foundational AI and is developing 3,000 AI practitioners and 300 specialists.\nSCS says it will review the Skills Pathway for AI programme based on employer feedback, the continued relevance of the listed courses, and whether participants can demonstrate workplace capabilities. It did not announce placement targets.\nThe initiative is SCS's third skills pathway, after cybersecurity in 2024 and cloud in 2025. An analysis of more than 750 people enrolled in cybersecurity courses or certifications under its Level 2 Cybersecurity Skills Pathway found that 85% either remained in employment or entered employment.\nNearly six in 10 participants who remained employed recorded median wage gains of about 5.8%, while those entering employment had median starting salaries of about $5,500 a month, according to SCS.
