Kalshi to Appeal After Washington Injunction on Prediction Markets

A Washington state judge ordered Kalshi to stop offering most of its prediction market contracts in the state, finding they likely constitute an illegal gambling operation, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

King County Superior Court Judge John McHale signed a preliminary injunction Wednesday requiring Kalshi to geofence the state by Aug. 19 and add stricter restrictions by Sept. 2, according to the report.

The order stems from a lawsuit by Washington Attorney General Nick Brown; a Kalshi spokesperson said the company is regulated by the CFTC and is weighing its legal options, the report said.

The order covers contracts on politics and sports but excludes commodities, climate, economics and finance categories, Bloomberg reported.
