Hutchison Ports said a plan to jointly control a key operator of a deep-sea container terminal in Barcelona with Terminal Investment Limited--part of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company Holding--has been discontinued.
In December, the European Commission opened an in-depth investigation into the deal to jointly control Terminal Catalunya saying it had concerns the move could lead to higher prices, or lower quality container terminal services, at the port of Barcelona.
"The Commission takes note of TIL's and Hutchison's decision to terminate their agreement," a spokesperson for the commission said on Monday.
An update on the European Commission's website said a notification to the European Union's merger watchdog of the planned transaction was withdrawn on Aug. 3.
Hutchison Ports is held by Hutchison Port Holdings, which is majority owned by Hong Kong-listed CK Hutchison Holdings.
The agreement was flagged to EU competition officials for review in November 2025.
