Toyota’s next update is slated for Monday August 3.\nNissan announced temporary shutdowns of two Fukuoka facilities — Nissan Motor Kyushu and Nissan Shatai Kyushu — till July 31. While the automaker said its assembly plants were not damaged by the earthquake, parts procurement has been delayed.\nHonda brought its Ozu town motorcycle factory to a standstill from July 28 through Friday, citing necessary repairs after a major water leak.\nAutomotive supply chain faces uncertainty amid damage assessments\nKey automotive parts suppliers have also halted operations and have not confirmed restart dates as of the time of publication.\nAisin, a major parts supplier in the Toyota Group, confirmed on July 29 that all its employees are safe but that it is still assessing damage to its plant in Kumamoto city.\nAstemo, which has close ties to Honda Motor, reported that three employees had sustained minor injuries at its Fukuoka factory and that water, electricity and gas services have been cut off.\nGiken Kogyo, another Honda-affiliated auto parts manufacturer in Kyoshi city, has stopped production since July 29 to assess the impact of the earthquake.\nFCC, a major supplier of motorcycle clutches to Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki motors, is based in Uki city and has been closed since July 29 to assess damage to its production facility.\nAnother headwind for the aluminium sector\nThus far, most market participants in the aluminium and recycling sectors anticipate minimal immediate impact on society and businesses from the earthquake. However, some have cautioned that any significant disruptions would more likely stem from secondary incidents such as blasts or fires in the aftermath.\n“We didn’t hear any significant impact at the major auto firms,” a trader told Fastmarkets.\n“The earthquake was massive, even for Japan, but general aluminium sentiment had already been bearish. The market is already so quiet, it can’t get any quieter,” a scrap supplier said.\nJapan auto industry already under pressure from weak demand\nJapan’s automotive sector has been navigating a brutal year, battered by supply chain disruptions and softer demand from the Middle East following the US-Iran conflict that began late February, and mounting competitive pressure from Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brands.\nIndustry leader Toyota has projected a profit decline for the fiscal year to March 2027. The automaker recalibrated its manufacturing plans as recently as June, with plans to trim overseas output by 100,000 units to February 2027 — a deeper reduction than the initial 83,000 units flagged in May.\nSeveral other automakers had ceased exports to the Middle East in April.\nIn May, Honda Motor posted its first annual loss in nearly 70 years.\nIn mid-July, Nissan announced at a press conference that the company will close its Shatai Shonan factory by March 2027 and its flagship Oppama factory by the end of fiscal 2027, with plans to consolidate production entirely at its Kyushu facility. \nThe company did not comment on whether the latest earthquake disruptions will impact the restructuring timeline.\nSoft demand limits aluminium purchasing activity\nWith the sector in the thick of its summer slowdown, several automakers have indicated to aluminium and scrap suppliers that they have sufficient inventories for the third quarter and were not interested in procuring more material.\nIn the past month, a softer yen against the US dollar has deterred imports as well. The Japanese currency has been trading firmly above ¥160 per $1 across July, with exchange rates last at ¥163.31 per $1 on July 29, according to Fastmarkets’ currency converter.\nJapan aluminium premiums continue to soften\nFastmarkets’ daily assessment for aluminium P1020A (MJP) spot premium, cif Japan was $300-400 per tonne on Thursday July 30, widening lower from $320-400 per tonne at the start of the week.\nIn the secondary aluminium market, Japanese imports of cast alloys like ADC12 have slowed significantly since the beginning of July due to the auto sector slowdown.\nCompounding the downward pressure, the United Arab Emirates’ scrap export ban implemented in June has led to a surge in downstream ADC12 production in order to circumvent export restrictions, flooding the market with low-priced material that has forced regional offers lower.\nUAE-origin ADC12 deals were last heard at $3,000 per tonne CFR main Japanese ports (MJP) in the week to July 22.
