Prudential Financial reported a higher profit in the second quarter, boosted by growth from its international businesses.

The Newark, N.J.-based insurer on Tuesday logged a profit of $985 million, or $2.80 a share. That compares with a profit of $533 million, or $1.48 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, consolidated adjusted operating income was $4.08 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting $3.52 a share.

PGIM, the company's global investment-management business, reported assets under management rising 4% to $1.49 trillion.

The company's U.S. businesses reported adjusted operating income of $957 million, roughly flat from a year earlier.

Adjusted operating income rose to $855 million from $761 million in the international businesses, boosted by higher net investment spread results and joint venture earnings, as well as business growth in Brazil.

Those were partially offset by Prudential of Japan, where sales have been suspended as the company implements operational and governance changes following findings of employee misconduct.
