WASHINGTON -- The late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), an influential lawmaker for decades and a top adviser to President Trump on foreign affairs, will be laid to rest this week following a series of ceremonies that kicked off Tuesday morning in the nation's capital.

In a nod to the senator's 33 years of military service, members of the Air Force will carry Graham's casket into the Capitol for a brief Rotunda ceremony, followed by an invitation-only funeral at the Washington National Cathedral in the afternoon.

Trump is scheduled to deliver a tribute speech to honor one of his closest allies and confidants, with many of Washington's most powerful figures in attendance, along with world leaders. According to the program, other speakers include Fox News primetime host Sean Hannity and Graham's niece, Emillie Boggs Roberts. Rev. Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, antiabortion leader Marjorie Jones Dannenfelser and Trump ally Rev. William Franklin Graham III will read scriptures.

Graham's body will then be flown home to South Carolina, where ceremonies conclude Wednesday with an F-16 flyover, a public service and a private family burial.

The senator died July 11 at age 71 from an aortic tear, just days after returning from Ukraine as part of his work to push a Russia-sanctions bill.

Graham played an integral role in the country's foreign relations, positioning himself as Trump's right-hand man on Russia and the Middle East. He frequently visited troops overseas, championed aid to Ukraine and took hardline positions on Iran.

The funeral attendee list draws from his position as a Trump ally, defense advocate and hawkish foreign-policy figure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew to the U.S. to attend the event and meet with Trump.

Graham would sometimes break with party orthodoxy and cross the aisle to work with moderate colleagues on issues of immigration reform, environmental policy and judicial confirmations. Graham emerged as one of Trump's key partners during his later years as Senate Judiciary chairman, aggressively championing the Supreme Court confirmations of justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

Graham's sister, Sen. Darline Graham, was sworn in three days after Graham's death to serve out her brother's senate term. She has since launched a campaign for the seat's six-year term, boosted by Trump's and some GOP leadership endorsements. Still, she faces a competitive primary against storied state conservatives Reps. Ralph Norman (R., S.C.) and Russell Fry (R., S.C.) and with former Gov. Mark Sanford.
