Jet Fuel Price Surge Takes a Bite Out of American Airlines

Dow Jones
Jul 23

American Airlines has been trying to close the gap with United and Delta, but its latest profit outlook risks putting it further behind.

With fuel prices on the rise again, American American now expects to break even in 2026 at the midpoint of its guidance. It said its adjusted earnings could range from a loss of 65 cents per share to a 65 cent per share profit this year.

American shares traded down nearly 4% in pre-market trading.

United Airlines is expecting adjusted earnings of $9 to $11 per share this year, while Delta anticipates a range of $6.50 to $7.50 per share.

Fuel prices have continued to climb over the weeks airlines have been reporting earnings, complicating their efforts to predict how the year will play out. But strong travel demand has been a bright spot, with consumers picking up much of the tab for airlines' higher fuel costs.

American said in the second quarter, it was able to offset nearly half of the $2.2 billion in added fuel costs by charging higher fares.
