General Motors Sells Fewer, but More Profitable Cars

Shares of General Motors are ticking up after the automaker hiked its full-year profit forecast, undeterred by slipping U.S. sales volumes.

The Detroit automaker is selling bigger, pricier vehicles, having shed less-profitable models in recent years. The result: Its revenue for the second quarter rose nearly 2%, despite a 7% decline in cars sold in the U.S. over the same period.

CEO Mary Barra said pickup and SUV sales have defied predictions that high gas prices will dent demand. "It's just not happening," Barra said in a call with analysts. "We're building everything we can sell."

Executives said they expect to continue cashing in on big SUVs and pickups. GM is launching a new version of its Chevrolet Silverado pickup late this year and plans to expand U.S. truck production in 2027.
