Woodside Energy Group (ASX:WDS) failed to convince Western Australia's Supreme Court to force environmental activists to furnish documents related to the planning of a stench gas protest at the company's Perth office in 2023, according to a verdict delivered on Thursday.

The company asked the court to compel three activists who were involved in the protest to release information on other parties that may have participated in its planning and execution. The three defendants pleaded guilty to the respective charges in 2025.

However, the court ruled that evidence and submissions provided by Woodside "do not rise above mere conjecture or speculation."

It acknowledged that the company "clearly devoted very considerable resources" to its application, but granting the application would "involve a very serious invasion of privacy and confidentiality and should only be made as would be required by the interests of justice."

A Woodside Energy spokesperson told MT Newswires that the company is reviewing the judgement.

Its shares rose 1% in recent Thursday trade.
