CVS Health (CVS) will pay $36.5 million to resolve allegations that it knowingly submitted false claims to MassHealth and other government healthcare programs by over-dispensing insulin pens and improperly obtaining reimbursement.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell said Thursday the settlement was reached in coordination with the US Department of Justice and attorneys general from 35 other states and the District of Columbia.

Massachusetts will receive $1.3 million from the settlement.

Under the agreement, CVS admitted and accepted responsibility for certain conduct, including that government healthcare programs reimbursed the company for insulin pen refills that were ineligible for reimbursement, according to the statement.
