BHP Seeks Permit for $1.5 Billion Cerro Colorado Restart

BHP Group said it has filed an environmental permit application for a $1.5 billion project to reopen the Cerro Colorado in northern Chile.

The world's biggest miner by market value closed the mine in late 2023 but said it would explore options to restart operations there, including through the use of leaching technologies and desalinated water.

BHP said it plans to use treated wastewater transported through a pipeline of more than 100 kilometers, equivalent to 60 miles, from the municipality of Alto Hospicio to the mine site. The project could enable the mine to run for another 20 years, BHP said.
