Starbucks (SBUX) stores in South Korea will close at 3 p.m. on June 22 to provide staff with historical awareness and sensitivity training, after a controversial marketing campaign, several news outlets reported Monday, citing a statement from local operator Shinsegae.
Starbucks Korea has received backlash from customers after launching an online campaign last month that evoked the Gwangju democratic uprising, a series of demonstrations by pro-democracy protestors that were suppressed by the country's military, according to reports.
Starbucks intends to revamp its procedures for marketing approvals by introducing a checklist covering commemorative dates, disasters, military issues, and gender, among other socially sensitive factors, Shinsegae said, according to Reuters.
Starbucks did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
