Shares of Uranium Energy sank after the uranium miner said its loss in the latest quarter was wider year-over-year.

The stock fell about 18%, to $10.41, midday Tuesday. Shares are now in negative territory year-to-date.

Uranium Energy said its loss for the quarter ended April 30 widened to $52.3 million, or 11 cents a share, from $30.2 million, or 7 cents a share, in the same quarter a year earlier when it had a lower base of outstanding shares.

The Corpus Christi, Texas, company's operating costs jumped 54%, to $40.8 million. Mineral property expenditures were up, as were general and administrative expenses.

The company opted not to sell any inventory during the quarter, instead holding onto 1.45 million pounds of uranium. Production fell by 30% from the prior quarter while the per-pound cost of extractions rose.
