Penumbra received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for a technology aimed at addressing acute ischemic stroke.
The medical-technology company said Thursday the clearance is for its Thunderbolt product, which uses advanced computer-assisted vacuum thrombectomy technology to detect, fatigue and completely ingest blood clots.
The technology is designed to minimize catheter manipulation and allow for safe, complete blood clot capture in order to restore blood flow to the brain and give patients a better chance at recovery, the company said.
"Thunderbolt marks the beginning of a new era in stroke management, one that we believe will fundamentally change outcomes for patients," said Shruthi Narayan, president of Penumbra.
Thunderbolt will be prepackaged with one of Penumbra's catheters, the company said.
Strokes are the second leading cause of death worldwide. Stroke mortality worldwide is projected to increase by 50% between 2020 to 2050, the company said, citing a recent analysis.
Shares were rising 3.3% after the bell.
