Shares of Zumiez fell after the company reported softness in May sales and issued second-quarter guidance that fell short of Wall Street expectations.

Shares were down 15% to $19.85 after the ball on Thursday. The stock closed up 1.6% at $23.48, down 9.9% this year.

The apparel retailer on Thursday said its sales in the month of May rose 0.1%, while comparable sales fell 0.1% during the four weeks ended May 30.

"Despite some softness in North America during the May period, we are encouraged that we have been able to grow sales and margin through the challenges in the macro environment and feel we are well positioned to capitalize during the key back-to-school and holiday seasons when the consumer has a reason to come out and shop," Chief Executive Officer Rick Brooks said.

For the quarter ended May 2, Zumiez reported a loss of $13.3 million, or 82 cents a share. That compares with a loss of $14.4 million, or 79 cents a share, a year earlier.

The company said its loss includes a $2.9 million impact related to the settlement of a wage and hours lawsuit in California.

Sales rose to $193.3 million from $184.3 million a year prior. First-quarter comparable sales rose 4%.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting a loss of 81 cents a share on $191 million in sales.

For the current second quarter, the company said it expects a loss of between 23 cents and 8 cents a share on sales in the range of $210 million to $215 million.

Analysts are expecting a profit of 9 cents a share on $218.4 million in sales.
