Shares of Duluth Holdings climbed after the company improved its margins in the first quarter.

The stock was up 16% at $3.85 Monday morning. Shares have gained 85% since the start of the year.

The parent company for the Duluth Trading Co. apparel brand said its loss for the fiscal first quarter that ended May 3 was $10 million, or 29 cents a share. That's narrowed from a loss of $15.3 million, or 45 cents a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

The smaller loss came despite a drop in sales. The top line fell 4% to $98.6 million. But the cost of goods sold declined 15%. Selling, general and administrative expenses were down as well.

Chief Executive Stephanie Pugliese said the company has been getting more disciplined on inventory and reducing discounts. "These efforts led to enhanced gross margin, reduced inventory, improved profitability and stronger liquidity," Pugliese said.
