Shares of ADC Therapeutics plummeted after the company said it may pursue near-term cost cuts after reporting data from a Phase 3 trial of a lymphoma treatment.

Shares fell 38% to $1.90 in after-hours trading Wednesday. The stock closed down 2.8% at $3.08, down 13% this year.

The company said Zynlonta in combination with rituximab achieved statistical significance on the primary endpoint of progression-free survival, without any detrimental effect on a secondary endpoint of overall survival. The treatment also led to a higher complete response rate and duration.

The test arm saw a similar rate of Grade 3 treatment emergent adverse events but a higher rate of Grade 5 TEAEs, serious adverse events, and side effects that led to study drug withdrawal.

"In the context of a positive study, based on the totality of the data, we plan to discuss the benefit-risk profile of this combination with the U.S. FDA as we prepare for the planned supplemental biologics license application filing," Chief Executive Ameet Mallik said.

The company also said it will "continue to evaluate a broad range of value maximizing alternatives," including near-term cost reductions.
