American Eagle Aims to Navigate Slower Bottoms Sales -- Market Talk

1823 ET [Dow Jones]--American Eagle Outfitters is having trouble selling its pants. The retailer says weakness in the first quarter that resulted in an overall decline in sales in its namesake brand was primarily isolated to women's bottoms. As it heads into back-to-school season, the company is trying to make sure it is selling popular pants silhouettes. In the past, management has said there is more diversity in the types of silhouettes consumers are interested in buying, which has driven more demand for bottoms. Executives say they are now figuring out which silhouettes the ones to stock up on for the fall season. Shares fall 11%. (katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
