Consumer companies rose after surprisingly strong earnings from some stores and a drop in oil prices.

Dollar Tree rallied after the deep discounter posted a 7% increase in quarterly revenue to $4.98 billion.

The chain has historically gained relevance and outperformed competitors when operating amid a tough macroeconomic environment, Dollar Tree Chief Executive Mike Creedon said. Other deep discounters such as Dollar General rose in sympathy.

Best Buy shares surged after the electronics chain reported a higher profit and rising sales in the first quarter, boosted by strong gaming, computer and cellphone demand, as the company prepares to bring in a new chief executive.

Real-estate billionaire Tilman Fertitta struck a deal to buy iconic Las Vegas casino chain Caesars Entertainment for about $5.7 billion.

The Federal Reserve's preferred gauge of monthly price increases, personal-consumption expenditures price index climbed by 0.4% in April, as the Iran war drove up energy costs.

London-based consumer-products giant Unilever is planning to spend $270 million on an innovation center in New Haven, Conn., with plans to develop skin and hair products for the U.S. market and global customers.
