1221 ET - Kohl's is aiming to increase its value proposition, increasing its number of brands eligible for coupon usage. "Value has always been a cornerstone of Kohl's foundation and, in today's macro economy, it's a necessity for the low- to middle-income business that we serve," CEO Michael Bender says on a call with analysts. Shoppers are looking to stretch their dollars, he continues, as more of their money is currently being spent on gas and groceries. Coupons are helping consumers get more from their money, and Kohl's expanded eligibility is resonating well with shoppers. "We experienced an immediate and consistent increase in our penetration of sales included in coupon usage," he says. "We currently feel good with the edits we've made to our brand eligibility, but we will continue to closely monitor this going forward." Shares rise 17%. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
