Sherwin-Williams stock was rising Wednesday after Akzo Nobel said it had rejected a joint bid from the American paint maker and its Japanese peer Nippon Paint Holdings.

Sherwin shares climbed 1.1% to $314.80 ahead of the opening bell. Futures tracking the S&P 500 were up 0.3% as investors bet that the recent tech rally would roll on.

Akzo Nobel said in a statement on Wednesday that it had rejected a joint bid from Sherwin and Nippon Paint at an indicative price of 73 euros per share. Under the terms of the deal, Nippon Paint would launch the all-cash public offer, then sell parts of Akzo Nobel's business to Sherwin.

Sherwin-Williams and Nippon Paint didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Barron's.

Akzo Nobel stock jumped 16% to EUR61.12 on Wednesday, erasing the Dutch paint maker's losses for the year.
