Shares of Cytokinetics rallied after one of the biopharmaceutical company's product candidates showed promise in a late-stage trial for patients with a heart condition.

The South San Francisco, Calif., company's aficamten met primary end-points in a Phase 3 trial for patients with non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Patients taking the treatment showed statistically significant improvements in exercise capacity and symptom burden, the company said.

No new safety concerns arose during the trial. Left ventricular ejection fraction below 50% occurred in 27 patients taking aficamten, and two patients suffered a serious adverse event of heart failure.

Shares of Cytokinetics rose 21% to $80.08 premarket.
