Illumina posted higher profit and sales in the first quarter, citing rising demand for its gene-sequencing machines.
The genomics company on Thursday reported a profit of $134 million, or 87 cents a share, compared with $131 million, or 82 cents, in the same quarter a year ago.
Adjusted earnings came in at $1.15 a share. Analysts polled by Factset expected $1.05 a share.
Revenue rose 4.8% to $1.09 billion, ahead of the $1.07 million expected by analysts.
Chief Executive Jacob Thaysen said that demand for its NovaSeq X machine is increasing as the company helps its clinical customers expand into new application areas.
With the strong start to the year, Illumina bumped up its guidance. It now expects revenue between $4.52 billion and $4.62 billion, up $20 million at the midpoint versus its prior guidance.
It now forecasts adjusted per-share earnings between $5.15 and $5.30, up from $5.05 to $5.20.
