Federal Signal's shares jumped ahead of the opening bell after the maker of environmental and safety solutions boosted its full-year guidance following a stronger-than expected start to the year.
In premarket trading, the shares were 13% higher at $126.65. The stock has already risen 2.9% so far this year, and is up 48% over the last 12 months.
The Downers Grove, Ill., company recorded first-quarter net income of $70.4 million, or $1.14 a share, up from $46.3 million, or 75 cents, a year earlier.
On an adjusted basis, per-share earnings rose to $1.18, beating the 88 cents a share mean estimate of analysts polled by FactSet.
Sales for the three months climbed 35% year-over-year to $625.6 million, topping the $580 million analysts anticipated.
Federal Signal said orders for the first quarter totaled $623 million, an increase of $55 million from the prior-year quarter. Its backlog at March 31 stood at $1.04 billion, compared with $1.1 billion a year earlier.
The company said that given its first-quarter performance and backlog, it now expects full-year adjusted earnings of between $4.80 and $5.05 a share, where it previously was targeting $4.50 to $4.80. Sales for the year are now expected to be between $2.57 billion and $2.66 billion, against a prior range of $2.55 billion to $2.65 billion.
