Mullen Group posted higher first-quarter profit, with newly acquired businesses bolstering revenue that would have otherwise been under strain.

The Canadian trucking and logistics operator on Thursday posted a higher net income of 21 million Canadian dollars ($15.4 million), or C$0.22 a share, up from C$17.7 million, or C$0.20 a share, in the comparable quarter a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were C$0.20 a share, in-line with analyst expectations, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose 10% to C$547.7 million, topping analyst forecasts of a rise to C$544.2 million.

Mullen credits the contribution of acquired businesses, which were somewhat offset by a decline from its existing less-than-truckload unit and specialized and industrial services segment.

Chair and Senior Executive Murray Mullen said that there were early signs of improvements in the freight sector, with strong demand and tighter supply. He added that if this trend continues, pricing should improve, but noted that there are risks from the added cost of fuel caused by the conflict in Iran.

"The general market conditions showed signs of improving, with demand holding steady and a tightening in supply in several sectors of the trucking and logistics industry," Mullen said.
