UCB agreed to buy Neurona Therapeutics for up to $1.15 billion, a deal that would add potential epilepsy drug NRTX-1001 to the Belgian company's portfolio.

The agreement includes $650 million upfront and up to $500 million in potential future milestone payments.

UCB expects to close the transaction by the end of the second quarter.

Column Group, a longtime Neurona investor, led a $23.5 million Series A funding announced in late 2015. Other investors have included Fidelity Management & Research Co., UCB Ventures and Alexandria Venture Investments.

In December, South San Francisco-based Neurona presented results from ongoing Phase 1/2 trials evaluating NRTX-1001, a one-time, allogeneic inhibitory interneuron cell therapy for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. The company said it continued to see durable seizure reduction from a single administration in most subjects.
