Boston Consulting Group named a new head of North America, selecting a longtime senior partner to guide operations in the firm's biggest market as it embraces artificial intelligence in much of its work.

Mel Wolfgang, who works from the firm's Boston office, takes over the role May 1, BCG told staff in an internal note Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the matter. Wolfgang has a Ph.D. in hydrodynamics and has long worked across BCG's aerospace, industrial, operations and logistics functions. In recent years, he has also spent much time internally at BCG helping to develop a new bench of partners.

BCG is closely watched by much of corporate America since it advises executives at many of the biggest public companies. Wolfgang succeeds Sharon Marcil, who has been in the role since 2021 and whose term is coming to an end. Considered one of BCG's biggest rainmakers, she will remain a senior partner, working with clients.
