Credit: ATOTo use it, people need to download the ATO app and register their device.If they receive a call claiming to be from the agency, they can log in and select the verify call option.Be the first to know: Add 7NEWS as your preferred news source on GoogleA notification should arrive within 30 seconds confirming the contact is genuine.If no confirmation appears, hang up immediately and treat the call as a scam.The rollout forms part of the ATO’s Counter Fraud Program and strengthens existing protections in the app, including alerts when key account details are changed and the option to lock accounts to stop unauthorised access.The warning comes as impersonation scams continue to spike, particularly around tax time.The ATO recorded almost 7500 reports in July 2025 alone.“April Fool’s may have passed but don’t be fooled by fraudsters attempting to access your tax and super accounts,” Challen said.“Scammers are primed for the opportunity during tax time to try to take advantage of taxpayers who may be expecting communications from the ATO.“When in doubt, stop and check, before responding or acting on a call or message claiming to be from the ATO.”ATO Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen says the new feature gives Australians greater control over their tax and super security.
