Singapore Banks Face Challenges from Softer Credit Demand, Higher Costs -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
Mar 16

0344 GMT - Singapore banks' direct exposure to the Middle East conflict is limited, as they are focused on Greater China and Asean, CreditSights analysts write in a note. "We see challenges mainly from softer credit demand and, to a manageable extent, rising credit costs in trade, transport and [small and medium-sized enterprises] exposure, as well as potentially from its Asean exposure," the analysts say. However, the banks' wealth-related income could be boosted from safe-haven inflows from the Middle East. CreditSights maintains a market perform rating on DBS Group and United Overseas Bank, and an outperform rating for Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp.(amanda.lee@wsj.com)
