At a recent industry forum, Insta360 founder Liu Jingkang revealed that the company's monetization strategy for software and cloud services is approaching a pivotal stage. He identified two key drivers behind this shift: firstly, the limited computing power available on end devices, meaning that more advanced functions like automatic editing, effects, and photo retouching can be better handled in the cloud. Secondly, a global trend of rising memory prices is increasing hardware costs, making it logical to build a new business model by using AI to operate server-based derivative services.
Liu explained that current devices offer tens of TOPS of processing power, allowing customers to perform basic video editing for free while the device is charging. However, achieving high-quality results, defined as 90 points or above, requires cloud services. These include advanced video semantic understanding and AI-generated effects. The company has already implemented a model in which users first earn credits to try AI templates before purchasing credits and cloud services.
Liu also discussed a cross-industry collaboration with Honor, driven by shared brand attributes and a mutual focus on AI-powered imaging. In the automotive sector, Insta360 has partnered with Li Auto and BYD. Looking ahead, Liu envisions panoramic drones being integrated into vehicles, allowing them to fly in areas inaccessible to the car while providing an immersive in-cabin experience on the vehicle's large screen.
