A Canadian cybersecurity executive who held senior positions at multiple firms specializing in helping data breach victims negotiate ransom payments with cybercriminals has now been indicted in a federal hacking and data extortion case.
Court documents show that Edward Dubrovsky, who recently published a book on how to respond to cyber extortion, is now accused of conspiring to commit the very same crimes: threatening to leak stolen and hacked data, and using extortion tactics to interfere with interstate commerce.
The indictment against Dubrovsky remains sealed. Federal records show that the 54-year-old Dubrovsky was arrested and appeared Thursday in federal district court in Philadelphia. Court records indicate that Magistrate Judge Scott Reid ordered Dubrovsky transferred to the Eastern District of Texas federal court, where the case was filed. Prosecutors are seeking to detain him pending trial. The case files related to the Texas case also remain sealed.
It is not yet clear whether the charges against Dubrovsky are connected to a major series of hacking cases that senior FBI officials disclosed Friday morning. However, the timing of the two cases appears to coincide.
