Key developments in the coal industry on May 7, as reported by China Coal Resource Network, indicated that according to Kpler vessel tracking data, Russia's seaborne coal exports in April 2026 totaled 13.0076 million tons. This represented a month-on-month increase of 2.16%, marking the second consecutive month of growth, but a year-on-year decrease of 10.34%. By destination, Russia exported 3.6939 million tons of seaborne coal to mainland China in April, a decline of 4.84% from the previous month and a significant 33.59% drop compared to the same period last year. Exports to China accounted for 28% of Russia's total seaborne coal exports. From January to April 2026, Russia's cumulative seaborne coal exports reached 47.947 million tons, down 3.11% year-on-year. Exports to mainland China during this period amounted to 13.7597 million tons, a decrease of 15.81% year-on-year, representing 29% of the total.
Also on May 7, China Coal Resource Network reported that Russia's coal exports to China via railway in April 2026 reached 8.778 million tons. This was an increase of 6.71% compared to the same month last year but a slight decrease of 1.54% from the previous month. Breakdown by type showed thermal coal shipments at 5.149 million tons, down 1.64% year-on-year and 3.38% month-on-month; coking coal shipments were 2.600 million tons, up 27.58% year-on-year but down 2.44% from March; anthracite shipments totaled 1.029 million tons, increasing 7.97% year-on-year and 11.73% month-on-month. Cumulative railway coal exports from Russia to China for the January-April 2026 period were 34.163 million tons, a growth of 3.47% compared to the same period last year.
Further reports on May 7, citing data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency, indicated that Indonesia's coal exports in March 2026 were 37.6044 million tons. This represented a decrease of 10.19% compared to March 2025 but an increase of 2.79% from February 2026, remaining at a low level for the same period over the past five years. China remained the largest export destination for Indonesian coal. In March, Indonesia exported 12.074 million tons of coal to China, a decline of 21.26% year-on-year and 15.17% month-on-month, accounting for 32.11% of Indonesia's total coal exports for the month. Indonesia's thermal coal exports in March were 35.9507 million tons, down 10.82% year-on-year but up 2.61% from the previous month. As RKAB approvals gradually progress, spot supply from some Indonesian miners is expected to increase later. However, constraints from the Domestic Market Obligation policy and potential export tariffs may continue to suppress export volumes.
Additionally, data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency showed that from January to March 2026, the export value of coal and lignite from South Sumatra, Indonesia's second-largest coal-producing province, was $344 million, a sharp decline of 50.99% year-on-year. This weakness in a key commodity export is likely driven by factors including decreased demand from major buyers like China and India, export restrictions implemented by some miners due to significant production cuts and RKAB approval delays, and logistics bottlenecks caused by bans on public road coal transportation.
