AI Surge Drives Bullish Outlook: BNP Paribas Boosts Seagate Technology's Price Target

Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX) received a strong endorsement from a Wall Street firm on Monday. BNP Paribas has reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating and significantly lifted its price target from $1050 to $1275. This new target implies a potential upside of approximately 58% from the stock's current trading level, reflecting robust market confidence in data storage demand fueled by artificial intelligence.

As a leading global provider of data storage technology, Seagate Technology PLC manufactures nearline hard disk drives essential for cloud service providers and data centers. These enterprises require cost-effective storage solutions to manage the massive datasets generated by AI applications. BNP Paribas analyst Karl Ackerman highlighted that the core driver for this upgrade is a shift in Seagate's long-term agreements: "Commitment volumes under long-term agreements for calendar years 2028 and 2029 are increasing." These agreements allow Seagate to secure firm customer commitments on order volumes, product mix, and pricing four to five quarters in advance, substantially reducing the traditional cyclical risk of the storage industry.

Tightening market supply is also providing pricing support. As AI demand outpaces the company's 25% annual EB (Exabyte) shipment growth target, Seagate is positioned to secure favorable pricing terms across both nearline and non-nearline products. This strategy of managing production capacity could extend the industry's upcycle. The company's recent earnings report already demonstrated strong operational leverage: fiscal third-quarter revenue reached $3.11 billion, adjusted gross margins climbed to 47%, and free cash flow was generated at $953 million.

Additionally, the company's technology roadmap offers another layer of security. Its 50TB Mozaic 5 hard drive, built on heat-assisted magnetic recording technology, is expected to begin customer validation in 2027, potentially solidifying its cost and capacity advantages. Key risks include potential customer order delays, competitor capacity growth exceeding expectations, or a reduction in capital spending by cloud service providers.
