Banking Stocks Experience Significant Pre-Market Declines

Despite the major banks all reporting earnings that significantly exceeded market expectations, among the banks announcing results today, only Goldman Sachs saw its share price rise during the pre-market trading session.

With 40 minutes remaining before the official opening of the New York stock market, Goldman Sachs shares were up 3.6%.

The other four major banks were all down between 1% and 2% in pre-market trading, while S&P 500 index futures advanced 0.2%.

Bank of America fell 1.7%, JPMorgan Chase declined 2.1%, Citigroup dropped 1.7%, and Wells Fargo was down 1.2%.

Prior to the earnings releases, analysts had suggested that the market might have already priced in the positive impact of the banks' robust profits.

A JPMorgan research team at Baird wrote in a note to clients: "We believe the slight weakness in share prices today is rooted in previously elevated market expectations, rather than any underlying issues with the earnings reports themselves."

JPMorgan's results also included a substantial one-time gain related to its stake in Visa, a benefit that is unlikely to provide a sustained boost to its share price.
