Shares of Lincoln National surged 5.58% during Thursday's intraday session, as investors cheered the company's stronger-than-expected quarterly profit and a major reinsurance transaction that reduces risk on its balance sheet.

The rally was ignited by the release of second-quarter results, which showed adjusted earnings per share of $2.24, comfortably exceeding the consensus estimate of $1.96. The outperformance was driven by higher life insurance income, with the life insurance segment’s operating income rising $25 million year-over-year on favorable mortality trends and growth in executive benefits and core life sales. Although revenue of $4.54 billion came in below analyst expectations, the bottom-line beat reinforced confidence in the company's earnings power.

Adding to the positive momentum, Lincoln Financial also announced a reinsurance agreement with Talcott to cede approximately $5.8 billion of in-force guaranteed universal life (GUL) statutory reserves. Together with a prior deal, around 60% of the total in-force GUL block will be reinsured upon closing, targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. The transaction is expected to reduce the company’s risk-based capital (RBC) ratio by about 10 percentage points, while annual subsidiary remittances are projected to increase by $30 million to $40 million over the medium term. Management noted no material change to adjusted operating income is expected from the deal, signaling a capital-efficient derisking strategy.
