Airport in Tianjin Could Soon Have Direct Rail Link to Beijing's Tongzhou District

The first phase of construction for a key section of the Beijing-Binhai intercity railway has been completed, marking a significant step forward for the project.

The control-point engineering in the Beichen to Binhai New Area section of the Beijing-Binhai intercity railway, a 102.7-meter simple-supported arch bridge over the ramp of the Jin-Ning Expressway, has successfully finished its beam lowering work. This milestone paves the way for subsequent beam erection and is a critical part of the broader project.

The Beijing-Binhai intercity railway is a major project under the national strategy for the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, aimed at advancing regional transportation integration. The railway shares the same route and stations as the Beijing-Tangshan intercity railway between the Beijing City Sub-center and Baodi. In December 2022, the Baodi to Beichen section of the Beijing-Binhai line, along with the Baodi, Baodi South, and Beichen stations operated by the Beijing Bureau of the China State Railway Group, were opened for service.

The second phase of the project, from Beichen to the Binhai New Area, is now under accelerated construction by the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Intercity Railway Investment Co., Ltd. This phase will include two new stations: Tianjin Airport and Binhai West. In the future, passengers departing from the Tianjin Airport station or Binhai West station are expected to have a direct rail connection to the Beijing Tongzhou station.

The completed bridge, located in Dongli District, weighs a total of 10,318 tons and spans a busy ramp of the Jin-Ning Expressway. The construction site was highly constrained, with a minimum clearance of only 5.15 meters, making it a key control-point project for the entire Beijing-Binhai line due to its large span, high weight, and low clearance.

To ensure the safe, smooth, and efficient completion of the construction, the project team from China Railway No. 4 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. overcame numerous technical challenges, including controlling the posture of the large-tonnage bridge, dismantling the support structure under extremely low clearance, and maintaining high precision for the beam lowering at height. They innovated the construction process by applying a smart synchronized control system to manage 28 hydraulic jacks, each with a capacity of 800 tons, ensuring the beam lowering error was kept within 0.5 millimeters. A dual-control system, combining real-time camera monitoring with on-site manual supervision, was also used to manage construction safety risks.

Once the entire Beijing-Binhai intercity railway is fully operational, it will accelerate the formation of the "Railway on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region," further optimizing the regional transportation layout, and promoting connectivity and integrated economic development among the three areas.
