Bitcoin Whales Pause Sell-Off, Accumulate Over $2.7 Billion in 60 Days

Bitcoin whales have returned to the buying side, offering a potential bottoming signal for a cryptocurrency market that has been mired in a months-long slump.

According to on-chain data provider CryptoQuant, large holders have net added approximately 43,000 Bitcoin over the past 60 days, valued at roughly $2.75 billion at current prices. This trend began as Bitcoin's price fell near the $60,000 mark, signaling that this cohort has shifted back to accumulation after months of sustained selling.

Meanwhile, data from Glassnode shows that mid-sized holders owning between 100 and 1,000 Bitcoin, as well as ultra-large investors holding more than 10,000 Bitcoin, have also recently accelerated their buying pace.

Bitcoin is currently trading around $64,000, having declined roughly 50% from its October peak. Cryptocurrency-themed ETFs continue to experience capital outflows, and Strategy, the company that was once the market's most stable accumulator holding substantial Bitcoin reserves, has recently turned to net selling.

With retail investors exiting en masse and market sentiment depressed, the re-entry of institutional-grade capital is viewed by some investors as a positive sign that the market may be entering a bottoming phase.

Whale Return: Accumulation Spans Multiple Holding Tiers

This round of whale buying is not an isolated phenomenon but displays a broad-based characteristic across holding tiers.

CryptoQuant data (excluding exchange and mining pool accounts) shows that large holders began re-accumulating after Bitcoin stabilized near the $60,000 level, with balances continuing to grow. At the same time, balances among small and mid-sized holder groups have also moved higher in tandem.

Glassnode's data offers a more granular perspective. Mid-sized investors holding 100 to 1,000 Bitcoin have been steadily increasing their positions recently, while the cohort holding more than 10,000 Bitcoin is also in an active buying mode.

Glassnode analyst Sean Rose noted that the relevant data "reflects a directional trend in accumulation behavior rather than mere net balance changes, and since late July, this trend has clearly pointed to a comprehensive resumption of buying across all holding tiers."

Bitcoin's inherent characteristics give this signal special reference value — the whale cohort has long been regarded as Bitcoin's long-term believers, with their historical behavior patterns dominated by long-term holding. What is even more noteworthy is the timing of the buying: this is not chasing gains, but rather actively entering the market amid sustained weakness and price pressure.

Multiple Headwinds Persist: Retail Exodus, Strategy Turns Seller

Despite the encouraging accumulation signals, the macro headwinds facing Bitcoin remain too significant to ignore.

Bitcoin is currently down approximately 50% from its October peak, a relatively moderate decline compared to other tokens, with alternative coins suffering even heavier losses. Capital outflows from cryptocurrency-themed ETFs continue, and retail investors have already exited the market on a large scale during the earlier decline.

Even more notable is the shift in Strategy's stance. The company, which was previously one of the most prominent institutional buyers in the Bitcoin market, has now turned from buying to selling, removing this traditional source of support. Meanwhile, market trading activity remains subdued, with August spot trading volume falling to its lowest level for that month since 2021.

Nexo research analyst Dessislava Ianeva pointed out that the current market exhibits characteristics of insufficient participation and a lack of confidence, with an overall weak trading atmosphere.

Bottom or False Signal: Macro Environment Remains the Key Variable

Whether whale accumulation can serve as a leading indicator of a new bull market is a point of disagreement among market participants.

Optimists argue that deep-pocketed investors actively building positions during market weakness carries strong contrarian signal value, historically appearing in the early stages of trend reversals. The synchronized accumulation behavior across all holding tiers provides some basis for investors searching for market bottom signals.

However, Dessislava Ianeva remains cautious on this front. She stated: "Whale buying in a low-volatility environment can confirm structural accumulation, but it does not guarantee that the market will immediately embark on a comprehensive, broad-based bull run. A true overall market recovery first requires a supportive macroeconomic environment."

This statement highlights the core contradiction in the current market: on-chain data shows capital quietly flowing in, yet macro-level uncertainties have not dissipated, and whether the market can convert localized accumulation signals into a trend reversal remains to be seen.
