Barclays Suggests Humanoid Robots Might Not See Widespread Use Until After 2035

A report from Barclays analysts indicates that humanoid robots are unlikely to achieve large-scale deployment until after 2035. The analysts note that much of the current excitement surrounding the technology is based on pre-programmed demonstrations, teleoperation controlled by humans, or task-specific automation, rather than true general-purpose autonomy.

To reach genuine general-purpose capability, humanoid robots must develop the ability to perceive their environment, reason through complex situations, and exhibit adaptive behavior. The analysts draw a comparison to autonomous vehicles, which took over a decade to develop to a usable stage.

Consequently, they suggest that economically significant applications will likely occur closer to 2035 than 2030, with near-term deployment being limited to narrow, controlled industrial settings.
