Thunderbird iO Without Cameras Aims to Become a User's Constant 24-Hour AI Companion

On August 21st, Thunderbird Innovation unveiled its latest AI eyewear, the iO, priced at a standard 2,499 yuan with an early-bird promotional price starting from 1,996 yuan.

Distinct from its V-series, which centered on first-person perspective shooting, the iO omits a camera entirely, focusing its appeal on near-eye display, voice memo capabilities, and proactive AI integration. The company states the product weighs as little as 34 grams and supports a two-day battery life.

This move represents a further refinement in Thunderbird's segmentation of its AI glasses product line.

Over recent years, Thunderbird has charted several relatively clear paths: the Air and GT series are geared towards cinematic viewing and large-screen entertainment, the V series has carved out a niche in videography, and the X series handles full-color display and spatial computing.

With the iO, the focus shifts to everyday wear. The ambition is to transform AI glasses from a device you pick up when needed into a terminal users can wear continuously across work, commuting, and social settings.

This strategic direction explains why the iO doesn't stack on cameras, full-color displays, or spatial interaction capabilities. In contrast to capture-focused glasses like the V4, the iO deliberately reduces visual collection hardware to achieve a lighter weight and a silhouette closer to standard eyewear. When compared to the X series, its display capabilities lean towards presenting information like weather, schedules, to-dos, notifications, subtitles, and teleprompting, rather than a comprehensive spatial computing experience.

On the software front, the iO's core strength is its "memory" function. The product can transcribe meetings and conversations, generating summaries and action items. It also supports real-time subtitles, translation, teleprompting, and searchable history logs.

Thunderbird indicates that the system will construct a personal context based on voice and location data, offering relevant prompts during dialogues and meetings. The value of these features isn't to replace single-session AI Q&A on a phone, but rather to accumulate continuous personal data, thereby reducing the effort users spend on repeatedly describing their background or context.

Thunderbird's decision comes at a time when AI glasses development paths are clearly diverging.

One category, the display-less smart glasses, relies on cameras, microphones, and open-ear audio to address shooting, calling, and voice assistant needs. The other path attempts to project information directly into the user's field of view using optical waveguides.

According to Counterpoint data, in the first quarter of 2026, global shipments of AR glasses and display-less smart glasses grew 136% and 210% year-over-year, respectively. Within the AR glasses segment, the share of optical waveguide solutions jumped from 18% in the same period last year to 42%.

The iO finds itself at the intersection of these two routes: it retains display capability but discards the camera; it emphasizes AI memory but doesn't position itself as a miniaturized AR computer. For Thunderbird, this marks a new product line distinct from its viewing, capture, and spatial computing offerings.

For the industry as a whole, the competition is shifting from "who can put AI into glasses first" to "who can get users to wear them for longer periods without feeling intrusive."
