Jul 30

Southern Co posted a rise in second-quarter profit, though overall revenue remained flat due to a decline in fuel income. The utility and energy company reported net income of $1.17 billion, or $1.03 per share, for the quarter, up from $880 million, or $0.80 per share, in the same period last year.

On an adjusted basis, excluding certain one-time items, earnings per share came in at $1.13, surpassing the $1.01 consensus estimate from analysts surveyed by FactSet. Revenue was essentially unchanged at $6.98 billion, falling short of the $7.23 billion that FactSet analysts had forecast.

Fuel revenue dropped 6% to $1.06 billion, while non-fuel sales increased by 2%. Wholesale and other electricity revenue saw gains, but natural gas sales revenue declined over the period.
