Hong Kong's three major stock indices ended mixed on Monday, with the Hang Seng Tech Index turning lower in late trading to post the worst performance. The "good news priced in" effect took hold as robot-themed ETFs saw broad pullbacks. Meanwhile, OpenAI's growth slowdown dented the AI narrative, dragging communication ETFs lower. Bank ETFs, however, edged up as stabilizing net interest margins and attractive dividend yields drew defensive capital.
The Hang Seng Index rose 0.09% to close at 25,495.07 points, with full-day turnover reaching HK$253.175 billion. The Hang Seng Tech Index fell 1.21% to 4,682.05 points. Among the largest Hong Kong ETFs by scale, Tracker Fund of Hong Kong (02800) gained 0.15% to HK$26, Hang Seng China Enterprises Index ETF (02828) rose 0.23% to HK$87.1, while CSOP Hang Seng Tech Index Daily (2x) Leveraged Product (07226) dropped 2.26% to HK$3.38.
The "good news priced in" effect was evident in the robotics sector, with robot ETFs falling across the board. Robot ETF Fudan (159272.SZ) slid 9.21% to RMB 0.808, Robot ETF E Fund (159530.SZ) lost 9.11% to RMB 1.337, and Robot ETF Penghua (159278.SZ) declined 9.1% to RMB 0.949. Tianhong Fund's Qi Shichao noted that overseas growth stock adjustments and elevated US Treasury yields overnight, combined with profit-taking after a major event, triggered the pullback. The upcoming listing of Unitree provides a trackable whole-machine benchmark, shifting the sector's focus from "storytelling" to "delivery validation," with no new evidence yet of a deteriorating industry outlook. Huatai Securities echoed this view, stating the robotics sector is transitioning from "theme-based pricing" to "mass production and demand verification pricing," with Unitree's IPO valuation potentially serving as a new anchor for the sector.
OpenAI's slowdown in second-quarter growth rattled the AI narrative, leading to a collective decline in communication ETFs. Communication ETF ChinaAMC (515050.SH) fell 8.08% to RMB 1.012, Communication ETF Fudan (159583.SZ) dropped 8.08% to RMB 1.627, and Communication ETF Guotai (515880.SH) lost 8.04% to RMB 0.652. The weaker growth figures shook confidence in the "capital-intensive" logic of AI infrastructure, sparking a de-rating driven by both macro rates and commercialization expectations. However, Guolian Minsheng Securities argued that overseas AI cloud demand remains robust, with orders, pricing, and project payback cycles from CoreWeave and Nebius further validating computing power resilience and AI infrastructure returns. Continued capacity expansion by overseas cloud providers is expected to boost high-speed interconnect demand, sustaining opportunities in AI computing expansion and high-speed optical interconnect technology.
Bank ETFs rose modestly as stabilizing net interest margins and high dividend yields attracted risk-averse capital. Bank ETF China Universal (512820.SH) gained 1.92% to RMB 1.435, Bank ETF Southern (512700.SH) added 1.9% to RMB 1.505, and Bank ETF ChinaAMC (515020.SH) climbed 1.86% to RMB 1.75. Data from the National Financial Regulatory Administration showed commercial banks' net interest margin stood at 1.41% at the end of the second quarter of 2026, up 1 basis point from the first quarter—the first quarter-on-quarter increase since 2022, which institutions view as a sign of fundamental improvement. CITIC Securities noted that regulatory data for the second quarter showed optimistic bank margins, stable asset quality, continued capital buildup, and stabilizing earnings growth. With the earnings season starting next week, listed banks are expected to maintain stable operations with modest profit growth recovery, leaving limited room for fundamental surprises and keeping sector volatility low in the near term. Looking ahead to the third quarter, earnings trends are expected to remain stable, with long-term macro narratives continuing to unfold and absolute annual returns still likely to extend.
Huatai Securities pointed out that the Hang Seng Index has rebounded 11% since June 26, drawing widespread attention during market volatility. The Huatai Hong Kong sentiment index entered the panic zone on June 3, signaling a buying opportunity, and has since recovered to near-optimistic levels. While this rebound coincided with the earnings season, the rapid sentiment- and valuation-driven recovery has rendered long-term fundamental factors temporarily ineffective in Hong Kong. From August onward, the market is expected to return to a fundamental-driven focus, with structural opportunities in sectors with strong fundamentals likely to persist. Huatai believes Hong Kong valuations have now recovered to neutral levels. With long-term earnings expectations largely unchanged, the current ERP gap from the 2025 low is less than 1%. From a global perspective, Hang Seng valuations are close to levels supported by global liquidity indicators. Further valuation gains will require improved AI progress and earnings delivery expectations from Hong Kong-listed companies, or stronger domestic policy support and recovery signals.
