UK Youth Unemployment Crisis Deepens: Study Reveals Only Half of Young People Hold Paid Jobs

Analysis from the Intercorp Financial Services Inc. (IFS) indicates that by the end of last year, only half of individuals aged 16 to 24 in the UK were engaged in paid employment, highlighting the severity of the nation's escalating youth unemployment crisis. Research based on administrative data found that this proportion has decreased from 54.9% at the end of 2022 to 50.6%, a decline comparable to periods during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2008 financial crisis. The IFS attributes this crisis to soaring employment costs, deteriorating mental health conditions, and the rise of artificial intelligence. "The decline in youth employment rates in the UK is likely to alarm government officials, especially since we know that unemployment early in a career can have lasting negative effects," noted Jed Michael, a research economist at the IFS and one of the authors of the report. Official data show that nearly 1 million young people aged 16 to 24 are currently classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), a number that has risen sharply in recent months. The plight of young people is fueling public dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Starmer. Following a significant defeat for the Labour Party in local elections, he is facing a potential leadership challenge, with many young voters shifting their support to the left-wing populist Green Party. "Too many young people are neither working nor in education or training. This analysis shows we cannot simply assume this problem will resolve itself as the economy improves," said Jonathan Townsend, UK Chief Executive of The King's Trust, the youth charity that funded the research.
