Jefferies has released a bullish report on Kweichow Moutai, highlighting a strategic transformation towards a luxury brand operating model akin to Hermes, with a target price of 2100 yuan. This comes after Moutai disclosed its 2026 first-half financial results on August 14.
Analysts John Chou and Lisa Liao from Jefferies identified two key changes driving this shift: the winding down of the "Moutai Bank" lending operations and a fundamental change in pricing philosophy. They argue that Moutai is moving away from a volume-focused approach to one centered on scarcity, pricing power, and brand appeal.
The report states that luxury brand success depends on managing scarcity and pricing power, not maximizing sales volume. Moutai is now actively creating controlled scarcity by balancing supply and demand, stabilizing retail prices, and maintaining healthy inventory levels. This positions Moutai as a luxury asset rather than a consumer staple, similar to Hermes International SA, which deliberately limits production to sustain its brand premium.
Jefferies believes this shift, if sustained, should support stronger pricing power, higher-quality earnings, healthier channel economics, and superior long-term shareholder returns. The new channel strategy of returning market control to major distributors is expected to help stabilize the retail price of Feitian Moutai.
The "Moutai Bank" operations, which involved lending to subsidiaries and related companies, have significantly contracted. In the first half of 2026, loan volume shrank by about 80% year-on-year, freeing up substantial cash flow. Moutai generated approximately 70 billion yuan in free cash flow during this period, exceeding its net profit of 44.5 billion yuan by 57%, with a FCF/net profit ratio of 1.6 times. Jefferies calls this one of the strongest cash generation periods in Moutai's history.
The report indicates that capital allocation is being reshaped, with excess liquidity now more likely directed towards dividends, share buybacks, and core business investments rather than supporting peripheral entities. The ongoing expansion of direct-to-consumer (DTC) channels reduces the need for financing channel partners, further evidence of a broader reform focused on balance sheet efficiency, capital discipline, and shareholder returns.
Jefferies forecasts Moutai's revenue to reach 186.192 billion yuan in 2026, 201.255 billion yuan in 2027, and 218.583 billion yuan in 2028. Corresponding EPS estimates are 72.56 yuan, 79.36 yuan, and 87.09 yuan. Based on a DCF valuation, Jefferies sets a base target price of 2100 yuan, implying a 56% upside from the current price of 1341.99 yuan, with a Buy rating maintained.
Three scenario analyses are provided: a base case (2100 yuan, +56%) assuming stable macro conditions and growing demand for premium baijiu; a bull case (2700 yuan, +101%) with macro outperformance and accelerated consumption upgrades; and a bear case (1100 yuan, -18%) with a significant macro slowdown and consumer downgrading.
Jefferies expects Moutai to achieve mid-to-high single-digit volume growth over the next three years, with price increases and product mix upgrades as the main sales growth drivers. Products like Moutai 1935 are also seen as having sustainable growth potential. Key catalysts include ex-factory price hikes, rising Feitian retail prices, and traffic growth from DTC channels, particularly iMoutai. Downside risks include unexpected channel destocking, macroeconomic slowdown, and food safety issues.
