South Korean Equity Market Sees Foreign Outflows and Retail Leverage as Individual Accounts Surpass Two Per Capita

The South Korean stock market has recently reached new highs, with the benchmark KOSPI index nearly doubling since the start of the year.

However, on Friday, the 26th, the KOSPI experienced a sharp intraday decline exceeding 8%, marking the second time this week that a circuit breaker was triggered.

This dramatic volatility, featuring two significant "rollercoaster" swings within a single week, has drawn attention from global markets.

Data reveals that retail trading accounts for an exceptionally high proportion of activity.

As of June 24th, the total number of domestic stock trading accounts in South Korea reached 108.77 million.

With the nation's total population just over 50 million, this equates to more than two stock accounts per person on average, with substantial capital flowing in through high-leverage ETFs.

Last week, the Federal Reserve's shift to a more hawkish monetary policy stance directly pressured high-valuation technology sectors.

A report from JPMorgan indicates that foreign investors have been net sellers in the South Korean market this year, with outflows totaling approximately $95 billion.

Conversely, retail investors have been net buyers year-to-date, accumulating purchases of around $80 billion, thereby becoming a primary force supporting the market.

This pattern, characterized by foreign selling being absorbed by leveraged retail buying, creates a situation where forced liquidations can be easily triggered during market volatility, potentially leading to a partial breakdown of price discovery mechanisms.
