Amazon Cuts Hundreds of Jobs in Its Physical Retail Division

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed today that the company is laying off several hundred employees in its retail division.

The spokesperson said, "We have made adjustments to certain teams within our Stores business, and we believe the new structure will better help us achieve our core work objectives." The spokesperson added that Amazon.com (AMZN) will continue to evaluate its team structure and find ways to drive product innovation for customers.

"As part of this adjustment, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles," the spokesperson said.

These layoffs follow multiple rounds of large-scale job cuts over the past year or more: Amazon cut 14,000 positions last October and another 16,000 in January of this year.

At the time, Beth Galetti, Amazon's Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, said the company did not intend to conduct widespread layoffs every few months.

Even so, Amazon has still carried out multiple rounds of targeted layoffs this year. This summer, Amazon reduced staff in the business unit responsible for its self-developed AI large model, Nova.
