Xingping City Implements Scientific Weed Control for 281,000 Acres of Summer-Sown Corn at Seedling Stage

Currently, the 281,000 acres of summer-sown corn in Xingping City have entered the critical seedling growth stage. To effectively curb weed proliferation and ensure a stable, high yield of corn, the city's agricultural technology department has recently been providing precise guidance to farmers, urging them to seize the optimal farming window and scientifically carry out chemical weed control during the corn seedling period.

It is understood that the current corn fields are experiencing a diverse and rapidly growing array of weeds. These primarily include grassy weeds such as volunteer wheat, crabgrass, and green foxtail, as well as broadleaf weeds like lambsquarters, copperleaf, and purslane. A large number of these weeds compete with the young corn seedlings for water, nutrients, and sunlight, severely inhibiting the normal growth of the corn. Agricultural technicians remind farmers that the core principle of post-emergence chemical control is to "seize the critical period and avoid high-temperature times." The optimal application window is when the corn is at the 3 to 5 leaf stage and the weeds are at the 2 to 4 leaf stage. Applying herbicides during this period is most conducive to the safe growth of corn seedlings and yields the best weed control results. Farmers are strongly advised to act promptly and seize this critical agricultural timing.

Song Liangdong, a senior agronomist at the Xingping City Agricultural Technology Extension Center, provided the following recommended application plans based on current field conditions: "First, for fields with fewer weed species, dominated mainly by grassy weeds, we suggest using a mixture of mesotrione, nicosulfuron, and atrazine for foliar spray when the corn is at the 3-5 leaf stage and before the grassy weeds exceed the 5-leaf stage. Second, for fields primarily infested with weeds like green foxtail, apply a foliar spray treatment of topramezone, atrazine, and a vegetable oil adjuvant when the corn is at the 3-5 leaf stage, and no later than the 8-leaf stage. Third, for fields with a high density of weeds, especially where barnyardgrass is prevalent, use a foliar spray of tembotrione mixed with atrazine during the corn's 3-5 leaf stage. For fields with a significant occurrence of velvetleaf, opt for a formulation containing bromoxynil octanoate."

The agricultural technology department has also clarified key precautions for standardized pesticide application. Farmers must use certified herbicides, strictly adhere to standard dosage ratios, implement a secondary dilution method when mixing, and absolutely avoid arbitrarily increasing application rates. The preferred times for application are before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m., with the period from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. being most effective. Operations should be halted during high-temperature periods. When field humidity is relatively high, maintain a water volume of 15 kilograms per mu. Furthermore, the use of nicosulfuron is prohibited in fresh corn fields. Herbicides must not be mixed with organophosphorus pesticides such as phoxim or chlorpyrifos, and a minimum interval of 7 days must be observed between applications. By scientifically and standardizing weed control during the seedling stage, the weed pressure base can be effectively reduced, laying a solid foundation for a stable and increased yield of the city's summer corn crop.
