Cui Dongshu: Global NEV Sales Reach 15.7 Million Units in Jan-Aug, Up 15% Year-on-Year

According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) Secretary-General Cui Dongshu's analysis of the global new energy vehicle (NEV) market for January-August 2026, global automobile sales reached 63.43 million units during the period, with NEV sales hitting 15.7 million units, a year-on-year increase of 15%. In August alone, NEV sales totaled 2.23 million units, up 16%, returning to historically normal growth levels.

The NEV share reached 24.5% during January-August 2026, with pure electric vehicles accounting for 17.3% and plug-in hybrids making up 7.5% of the automobile mix. Hybrid vehicles performed excellently with an 8% share. The global NEV penetration rate has shown a rapid upward trend overall, reaching 13.1% in 2022, 15.9% in 2023, 19.5% in 2024, and 23.6% in 2025. In 2026, the global NEV penetration rate stands at 24.7%, with Germany at 33.4%, Norway at 80%, the UK at 36%, while the US stands at only 7% and Japan at just 4%, highlighting extremely uneven global NEV development.

In 2025, US NEV sales totaled 1.72 million units, down 2%, a relatively low growth rate compared to recent years. Due to high tariffs and price increases following the cancellation of NEV subsidies, US NEV sales in August 2026 fell 44% year-on-year to 110,000 units. From January to August, US NEV sales reached 820,000 units, down 31% year-on-year. European NEV passenger car sales in 2025 reached 3.86 million units, an increase of 960,000 units or 33% compared to the same period last year. Preliminary statistics show European NEV passenger car sales in August reached 320,000 units, up 33% year-on-year, while January-August 2026 sales totaled 3.12 million units, up 34% year-on-year.

China's NEV passenger car global share reached 62% in January-August 2026, with July-August reaching a strong 65.3%. Looking at historical sales share, China's BYD leads globally, Geely is rising rapidly, and Tesla has shown weaker performance, falling to third place. Recently, SAIC Motor passenger vehicles and SAIC Wuling, two independent automakers, have performed well overseas. In 2025, independent NEV passenger car overseas market sales share reached 15.8%, up 6.2 percentage points. In 2026, the overseas market sales share of independent NEV passenger cars surged significantly, reaching 29% in August, a further leap of 14 percentage points. From January to August 2026, the overseas market sales share of independent NEV passenger cars was 24.8%, up 9 percentage points compared to the same period in 2025. Due to the strong performance of independent NEV exports and the severe contraction of the US NEV market, the overseas market sales share of independent NEV passenger cars increased substantially. China's hybrid vehicles developed at high speed in the previous two years, becoming a relatively large global hybrid market in 2022. With the rise of plug-in hybrids, China's global hybrid share declined from 2023, but in 2026 China's hybrid share recovered to 16% globally. The hybrid market is strongly dominated by Japanese and Korean companies. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai show very strong hybrid performance, accounting for 83% in 2026. As Europe suppresses Chinese independent automakers' pure electric vehicles, SAIC MG's hybrid performance in the European market has rapidly strengthened to an ultra-strong level of 6%.
