New 10-Year US Treasury Auction Yield Reaches Highest Since Financial Crisis

The auction of $42 billion in 10-year US Treasury notes has produced the highest yield since 2007, signaling strong demand from investors who have been seeking greater returns for financing the government.

The winning bid yield reached 4.683% on Wednesday, setting a new record since the global financial crisis. This figure was slightly above the market level just before the 1:00 PM New York bidding deadline, indicating demand fell just short of expectations. Following the auction, US Treasuries maintained their gains for the day.

This outcome sets the stage for Thursday's 30-year bond auction, which is expected to feature the highest financing rates in 25 years. Persistently elevated inflation above the Federal Reserve's target, coupled with a growing budget deficit, continues to push long-term bond yields higher.

"It's difficult for yields to decline given the large deficit, solid growth, ongoing conflicts, and inflation that remains above the Fed's target," said Gregory Faranello, head of US rates trading and strategy at AmeriVet Securities.

Earlier in the day, the anticipated Consumer Price Index (CPI) data prompted traders to reduce bets on a September rate hike by the Federal Reserve. The probability of a rate increase, as indicated by the swaps market, stood at about 40%, down from around 50% before the data release.

The yield on the two-year note, which is most sensitive to Fed policy changes, fell 3 basis points to 4.18%. Despite this, investors have fully priced in the possibility of a rate hike before the end of the year, highlighting persistent concerns over the price pressures facing the US economy.
